The Influence of Audience Behaviour on Players’ Performance

In the world of sports, the role of fans has always been considered a determining factor in match dynamics.

Below are the contents of two publications, one referring to football and the other to basketball, which deal with the influence of the public on the performance of athletes. Then some reflections on the importance of the values of Fair Play will follow, not only for athletes but also for the public.

The publication The Effects of Audience Behaviour on Football Players’ Performance investigates, using a qualitative approach, how audience behaviour — both positive and negative — affects the performance of athletes, specifically within the context of Maltese football.

Study Objective

The primary aim of the study is to understand, through athletes’ personal experiences, how spectator behaviour influences on-field performance. The authors delve into not only the immediate emotional impact of crowd presence but also the underlying psychological dynamics triggered by knowing one is being watched — whether live in the stadium or via media broadcast.

Methodology and Sample

The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with a sample of twelve Maltese football players: six from the senior national team and six from the U-15 national squad. The interview format allowed for the collection of rich, emotional, and subjective insights into the players’ perceptions and experiences concerning audience behaviour.

Main Findings

  1. Positive Effects of Supportive Fans

One of the central findings is that vocal and visible support from fans has a significantly motivating effect. Chants, applause, and emotional proximity from supporters serve as sources of energy, determination, and concentration. Home matches, in particular, are seen as an opportunity to “give back” to the fans, creating a virtuous circle between performance and support.

A senior player stated:

“When you play at home, they charge you up. They give you adrenaline, and you want to win not just for yourself but for them too.”

This sense of belonging — of playing for a community — strengthens player identity and their desire to perform well.

  1. Negative Impact of Hostile Audience Behaviour

In stark contrast, behaviours such as booing, insults, offensive chants, or racist comments cause anxiety, loss of focus, and underperformance. Younger players especially reported increased pressure, sometimes resulting in mental blocks or technical errors. The fear of making mistakes, amplified by public judgment, undermines spontaneity and mental clarity.

One player shared:

“You’ve got 14,000 people booing you, mocking you when you make a mistake… you get nervous, and then you’re afraid of making another one.”

Such pressure, interpreted as psychological stress, can turn the match environment into a hostile space, threatening a player’s emotional stability.

  1. The Impact of “Invisible Presence”

A particularly interesting aspect that emerged is the perceived visibility of players even beyond the stadium. Athletes reported feeling the “weight” of being watched by friends, family, TV audiences, or even social media users. This perceived “implicit presence” can also contribute to heightened pressure and emotional load during competition.

Practical Implications and Recommendations

The authors conclude with several practical recommendations aimed at improving the relationship between athletes and spectators:

  • Encouraging positive behaviour: Sporting authorities should actively promote respectful fan behaviour, publicly rewarding supportive and inclusive audience conduct.
  • Sanctioning negative behaviours: Disciplinary measures for hostile or violent fans are deemed necessary to safeguard athletes’ mental well-being.
  • Fan education: Through stadium signage, announcements, and awareness campaigns, the public should be sensitised about sportsmanship, inclusivity, and the psychological impact of their behaviour.
  • Psychological preparation of athletes: The study highlights the need to include sport psychologists in teams to help athletes develop stress-management strategies and emotional resilience.

Conclusion

The research by Calleja, Muscat, and Decelis makes a significant contribution to sports psychology literature by showing how the external environment — particularly audience behaviour — plays a crucial role in shaping athletes’ psychological balance and on-field performance. While the study focuses on Maltese football, its findings are broadly applicable across many sporting contexts, especially those with strong emotional and relational bonds between fans and players.

The study titled “Noisy Condition and Three-Point Shot Performance in Skilled Basketball Players: The Limited Effect of Self-Talk” by Liu Yang and colleagues, published in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living (January 2024), investigates how crowd noise and self-talk strategies affect three-point shooting performance in basketball.

🎯 Study Overview

  • Participants: 42 male national second-level basketball players from Beijing Sport University, averaging approximately 21 years of age.
  • Design: A 2×3 mixed experimental design:
    • Conditions: Quiet vs. Noisy environments.
    • Interventions: Control (no self-talk), Motivational Self-Talk (MST), Instructional Self-Talk (IST).
  • Tasks:
    • Static Three-Point Shots: Players took shots from a stationary position.
    • Dynamic Three-Point Shots: Players engaged in continuous play, including shooting, rebounding, and dribbling.
  • Noise Simulation: Included basketball commentary, dribbling sounds, whistles, and audience noise to mimic real-game distractions.

🔍 Key Findings

  • Impact of Noise:
    • Static Shots: Performance significantly declined under noisy conditions (p = 0.016).
    • Dynamic Shots: No significant difference between quiet and noisy conditions.
  • Effectiveness of Self-Talk:
    • No significant main effects of self-talk interventions (MST or IST) on shooting performance.
    • However, in static shots, the control group showed a significant performance drop under noise (p = 0.043), whereas MST and IST groups did not, suggesting a potential buffering effect.

🧠 Interpretation

The findings suggest that crowd noise negatively impacts static shooting performance, but this effect is less pronounced in dynamic, high-physical-demand situations. Self-talk strategies, while not significantly enhancing performance, may help mitigate the adverse effects of noise in static shooting scenarios. The study underscores the importance of psychological skills training, such as self-talk, to help athletes maintain performance under distracting conditions.

Finally, some reflections on the importance of the correct behavior of fans, with a focus on respect for the opponent and the promotion of Fair Play

Fans and Fair Play: The Role of Fans in the Culture of Sports Respect

In every sporting event, fans represent a fundamental component of the competitive environment. While on the one hand, fans can be a driving force for athletes, on the other, incorrect or aggressive behavior by the public can undermine the sporting spirit and transform sport into a place of tension. In this context, the concept of fair play extends beyond the playing field, also embracing the behavior of spectators.

Fair Play: not just for athletes

Traditionally associated with respect for the rules and sporting ethics by athletes and coaches, fair play is now understood in a broader sense. Organizations such as the European Fair Play Movement (EFPM) and UEFA emphasize that respect for the opponent, inclusiveness and fairness must involve all the protagonists, including fans.

The UEFA Respect Campaign, for example, aims to create safe and respectful environments in stadiums by rewarding fans who demonstrate positive behaviour, including towards opponents.

What does “correct fandom” mean?

Behaving like “correct fans” does not mean giving up the passion or identity of your team, but it implies:

  • Avoiding offensive, discriminatory or intimidating chants.
  • Recognizing the merit of the opponent, applauding technical gestures or sporting behavior.
  • Respecting referees, coaches and other fans.
  • Promoting a positive climate, even in defeats.

Some academic studies (such as Guschwan, 2012) highlight that organized curves and fan groups can become promoters of sports culture if supported by clubs and institutions.

Benefits of Respectful Cheering

Correct cheering brings measurable benefits:

  • For athletes: reduction of negative pressure, improved focus and greater motivation.
  • For the public: safer and more enjoyable experience, especially for families and children.
  • For the club: better public image, fewer disciplinary sanctions, greater attractiveness for sponsors and institutions.

Promoting change

To spread a culture of respect among fans, the following are essential:

  • Educational campaigns (in schools, in the media and at the stadium).
  • Active role of clubs: ethical code for fans, rewards for virtuous behavior, collaboration with leaders of the curves.
  • Targeted sanctions against racism, violence or insults (UEFA Fair Play Ranking model).

Conclusion

Fair play is not limited to the pitch: it is a collective responsibility. Fans, with their passion, have the power to profoundly influence the sporting climate. Choosing to support your team with respect and positivity means contributing to a healthier, more educational and inclusive sporting culture.
